The Australian Space Diversity Alliance acknowledges the valuable contributions of our National Committee member, Dwayne Fernandes, as we celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) and highlight the impactful message he delivered at the 2025 Disability Leadership Oration, inspiring pride and motivation in our shared commitment to inclusion.
Dwayne’s address brought the social model of disability to life, showing how environments, on Earth and in space, can either create barriers or unlock human potential. As Dwayne shared:
“In zero gravity, I have my conditions, but my disability is gone. When barriers fall away, possibility rises.”
This insight drives our mission: building industries and communities where everyone can participate fully.
ASDA initiative highlight
In 2025, ASDA led the way in transforming accessibility at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Sydney, a milestone in its 75-year history. The Congress introduced an accessibility statement, step-free access, and tailored support for attendees with disability, setting a new global standard for space sector inclusion. ASDA collaborated with partners to deliver live captions, accessible guidelines, and promote inclusive practices worldwide.
