Board Observer Program

Board experience is often seen as a crucial step toward leadership and executive roles, yet many organisations require prior experience to join a board—creating a "chicken-and-egg" challenge for emerging leaders.

This program helps break that cycle by giving you valuable exposure to governance in action. You’ll gain insights into strategic decision-making, risk management, and stakeholder engagement that can accelerate your career.

Whether you’re already in the space sector or looking to transition into it, this experience will position you as a future leader with the knowledge and confidence to contribute at the highest levels.

Become a Board Observer

As a board observer, you will attend monthly or bi-monthly virtual board meetings to gain firsthand experience of how boards operate.

While you won’t have formal responsibilities, such as voting or decision-making, you will observe key discussions on governance, strategy, and organisational priorities. You’ll have the opportunity to see how experienced board members approach complex issues, balance competing priorities, and make high-level decisions.

A board member will also be available to answer your questions and provide context outside of meetings, helping you deepen your understanding of governance and leadership.

What does success look like as a participant?

Success in this program means being an engaged and prepared participant. This includes:

  • Attending all board meetings on time and staying present throughout.

  • Communicating professionally with ASDA and the host board.

  • Researching the organisation and its industry before the program begins to maximise your learning.

  • Asking thoughtful questions to your assigned board contact to contextualise what you observe.

  • Contributing a reflective statement at the end of the program, summarising your key learnings and how you plan to apply them.

Host an ASDA Board Observer

Build your pipeline, lift diversity, shape future leaders

Board experience is often a prerequisite for leadership, yet difficult to access without networks or opportunity. The ASDA Board Observer Program closes that gap by placing a high-potential observer with your board for a six-month, structured immersion in real-world governance.

Why host an Observer

  • Strengthen your pipeline: identify emerging directors early and broaden succession options.

  • Advance inclusion: provide a practical pathway for under-represented talent to gain board literacy and confidence.

  • Fresh perspective, low risk: benefit from informed questions while decision rights remain with your board.

  • Reputation & impact: signal measurable commitment to diversity and workforce development.

How it works

  • Matched placement & mentoring: ASDA screens candidates and pairs each Observer with a dedicated board mentor.

  • Hands-on learning: attendance at board (and select committee) meetings, papers, pre-briefs and debriefs.

  • Guardrails: NDAs, code of conduct, clear scope; Observers have no voting rights.

What’s new for 2026

  • Expansion underway: ASDA has expanded its working group for the 2026 Board Observer Program and is inviting host organisations to strengthen their boards, as well as sponsors to invest in the sector’s rising leaders.

  • Target sectors: we’re seeking hosts across space, cyber and tech. No hosts are locked in; companies with boards should apply and must demonstrate a genuine commitment to diversity and workforce development.

Commitment

  • Typical duration: ~6 months (c. one meeting per month plus preparation).

  • Support: governance primer, onboarding, monthly check-ins with ASDA and mentor.

Next steps

  • Host an Observer: register your interest and outline your board calendar, mentor, and desired capabilities.

  • Sponsor the cohort: fund placements, travel or learning components, and help scale a proven leadership pathway.
