World Suicide Prevention Day: A collective responsibility

Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day 10th September, and ahead of RUOK Day on 12th September, we shine a light on the urgent need to address mental health in Australia. Did you know men make up 75% of all suicides? This heartbreaking statistic highlights how deeply the mental health crisis affects men, and why we must act collectively to prevent these tragedies.

At the Australian Space Diversity Alliance (ASDA), we are committed to supporting the wellbeing of every individual in our community. While our focus is on promoting diversity in the space sector, we recognise that a strong, resilient community starts with healthy individuals—especially our boys and men, who face unique challenges when it comes to mental health.

Men’s mental health is critical to the wellbeing of our society. When boys and men are empowered to seek help, express themselves, and receive support, they can grow into strong contributors—whether at home, in the workplace, or within industries like space and technology.

In Canberra, organisations like Menslink and EveryMan Australia are doing incredible work to support boys and men:

  • Menslink helps young men build resilience and cope with life’s challenges through mentoring and counselling, offering early intervention before crises occur.

  • EveryMan Australia focuses on men in crisis, providing vital housing and mental health services to those in desperate situations.

These organisations, along with national leaders like Beyond Blue, Movember, and Lifeline, remind us of the importance of fostering environments where men can thrive mentally and emotionally. Together, we can break the stigma surrounding men's mental health and provide the support they need before it’s too late.

What can you do?

  • Reach out to the men in your life. Sometimes a simple check-in can make a huge difference.

  • Share resources about the organisations doing this important work.

  • Encourage open conversations about mental health in your workplace, family, or community.

If you or someone close to you is struggling, take that first step—reach out. Help is available.

Support is real, and so is the strength that comes from reaching out when it's needed. No one should face their challenges alone.
